The Grove Hotel wins Green Apple Environment Award
The Green Apple Environment Awards, are an annual international campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world, and this year The Grove Hotel is proud to have received silver based on Recycling Initiative & Environmental Best Practise within the Sports/Leisure & Hospitality Category.
Thanks to the efforts of its staff, The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire has been able to focus on not only being a luxurious retreat, but one with a conscious culture and a place where luxury and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. The team has concentrated on making sure the hotel’s bedrooms, restaurants, bars and spa are places where luxury and sustainability go hand in hand.
No More Straws
The Grove has consciously reduced the prevalence of single-use plastic throughout the hotel and now only serves drinks plastic-free across each of the restaurants and bars, as well as eliminating plastic bottles from its room service, replacing them with glass bottles instead. Plastic straws have been replaced with biodegradable paper straws, whilst plastic stirrers and cocktail sticks have been replaced with those made from bamboo.
Reduce, Re-use, Recycle
The team are continuing to work with existing sustainable initiatives at the hotel, such as the ongoing partnership with New Hope Trust, a charity set up to help aid the homeless and vulnerably-housed in the local area. The charity offers comfort and much needed resources for many vulnerable people in need. The Grove regularly donates linens, bathrobes and towelling to New Hope Trust, which not only supports the charity but also reduce waste by re-using the items which would have otherwise gone to landfill once they were no longer fit for hotel use. Additionally, the hotel has joined the Clean the World programme, a charity which collects, cleans and re-uses guest soaps and amenities in countries less fortunate than the UK in a bid to reduce waste and help those in need.
Another sustainability initiative in place is the move from traditional printed newspapers to a complimentary newspaper app, which is available for all guests to use whenever they wish across the hotel. Traditional newspapers are still available on request, but with these small changes The Grove is hoping to make a big difference by reducing their demand and in turn save more trees.
